How to integrate with Purple Dot

How to connect Purple Dot's pre-order checkout to Swap Global for tax and duty calculation, and the setup requirements to be aware of.

Written by Jemma O'Leary

This article explains how to connect Purple Dot's pre-order checkout to Swap Global for taxes and duties, and what to check before you go live.

Before you start: which integration are you using?

How you set this up depends on how Purple Dot is integrated into your Shopify store:

  • Purple Dot as a payment provider inside Shopify checkout — no extra Swap setup needed. Your existing Swap Global tax and pricing configuration applies to pre-orders automatically, the same as any other order.

  • Purple Dot as a separate checkout — you need to actively connect Purple Dot to Swap Global and configure tax zones, covered below.

Connecting Purple Dot to your Swap account

Purple Dot needs an API key from Swap to request tax and duty calculations on your behalf.

  1. Get an API key from Swap.

  2. In the Purple Dot Merchant Portal, go to SettingsIntegrations.

  3. Under Tax, click Connect next to Swap.

  4. Paste the API key into the setup screen, then click Test Connection to confirm it's working.

Configuring tax zones in Purple Dot

Once connected, you tell Purple Dot which markets should use Swap for tax and duty calculation.

  1. In the Purple Dot Merchant Portal, go to SettingsTaxes.

  2. Add a tax zone for each region where Purple Dot should charge tax, and select Swap as the tax engine for the relevant zones.

Swap Global is built for international shipping — it currently can't set up a Pricing Zone for domestic orders. So if you sell domestically as well as internationally, you'll need a separate tax zone in Purple Dot using a different tax engine for your domestic market, and Swap only for the international one.

Tax zone setup only tells Purple Dot when to ask Swap for a calculation. Everything about how much to charge — duty and tax rates, and whether prices are shown inclusive or exclusive of tax/duty — is still controlled entirely inside your Swap Pricing Zones, same as for regular orders.

HS codes and product classification

For Purple Dot to calculate duties correctly, your products need accurate HS codes.

  • Purple Dot reads the HS code from your Shopify product data and passes it to Swap Global when requesting a calculation.

  • If a product doesn't have an HS code set, Swap Global will try to auto-classify it.

Tax and duty remittance for pre-orders

Swap Global remits tax and duty automatically after the pre-order is released from Purple Dot for fulfilment — not at the point the pre-order is originally placed.

Important: Swap must handle both tax and shipping together

If you're using Swap Global for tax and duty calculation in Purple Dot, you must also use Swap Global for shipping in that checkout. You can't mix Swap Global for tax/duties with a different shipping provider.
