This article explains how to configure Shopify's tax settings to work correctly alongside Swap Global — including when to disable international tax collection, how to handle VAT-inclusive pricing, and how to verify prices are displaying correctly.
ℹ️ Swap Global handles all duty and tax calculations for international orders. If Shopify is also collecting taxes for those same markets, customers will be charged twice at checkout. The steps below explain how to prevent that.
Check which markets have tax collection enabled
In Shopify Admin, go to Settings → Taxes and duties.
Under Collecting, review which regions have tax collection enabled.
If the Collecting column shows a dash (—) for a market, Shopify is not collecting taxes for it.
Swap Global users should only have tax collection enabled for their domestic market (e.g., UK store → UK market). All other markets should show no collection.
Disable tax collection for an international market
Follow these steps for each market where Swap Global is active and Shopify is currently collecting taxes (to avoid duplicate tax collection).
In Shopify Admin, go to Settings → Markets.
Open the market you want to update.
Click the + sign next to Taxes and duties.
Find the tax collection setting and open the dropdown.
Toggle the Duties and import tax option to Not collecting.
Click Done.
Click Save.
If your store uses VAT-inclusive pricing
If you're based in a country where taxes are included in product prices (for example, the UK), you need to enable an additional setting within your domestic market. In Shopify Admin, go to Settings → Markets → your domestic market → Taxes and duties:
Tax display → Show as included — ensures domestic customers don't see a separate tax charge at checkout on top of a price that already includes VAT.
Confirm prices are displaying correctly
Once your settings are configured, use Shopify's View as feature to verify prices are calculating correctly for a specific market:
In Shopify Admin, go to Products.
Click View as.
Select the market you want to check.
The product list updates to show prices in that market's currency. Click any product's price to see a full breakdown of how it's calculated.
When VAT-inclusive pricing is correctly configured, you should see a line confirming that domestic VAT has been removed from the price before it's recalculated for international markets.
