This article explains how to configure Shopify so that gift card orders created by Swap are fulfilled automatically when a return is processed.
Why this matters
When a customer selects a gift card as their return outcome, Swap creates a gift card order in Shopify (prefixed SGC). By default, Shopify does not automatically fulfil these orders — they remain unfulfilled until manually actioned or a fulfilment rule is in place.
Without auto-fulfilment configured, the gift card is not sent to the customer until someone intervenes.
Enabling auto-fulfilment in Shopify
The simplest way to enable automatic gift card fulfilment is via a setting in Shopify Admin:
In Shopify Admin, go to Settings.
Click General.
Scroll to Order processing.
Enable Automatically fulfil only the gift cards of an order.
Click Save.
Once enabled, Shopify will automatically fulfil gift card line items as soon as the order is created — no manual action is required.
Alternative: Shopify Flow
Alternatively, you can set up a Shopify Flow to trigger fulfilment for gift card orders. This approach offers more control but requires additional setup.
Only one method is needed. If the Shopify setting above is enabled, a Flow is not required.
Checking whether auto-fulfilment is active
To verify the setting is working, process a test return with a gift card outcome and confirm the resulting SGC order in Shopify shows as Fulfilled automatically.
