This article explains what split shipments are in Swap Global, how Swap handles orders fulfilled from multiple warehouses, and what to check in Shopify.

What are split shipments?

A split shipment occurs when an order is fulfilled from more than one warehouse or origin address. Rather than treating the order as a single shipment, Swap processes each fulfilment leg independently.

This means Swap can:

  • Apply de minimis thresholds per shipment

  • Calculate duties and taxes per origin–destination pair

  • Generate a separate commercial invoice for each shipment

  • Display each leg separately in the Swap dashboard

How split shipments work in Swap

When Shopify splits an order into multiple fulfilments, Swap handles each independently:

Rate requests: Shopify sends Swap a separate shipping rate request for each fulfilment group (per warehouse).

Duties and taxes: Calculated per shipment based on its specific origin and destination — not across the whole order.

De minimis thresholds: Evaluated per shipment, not the whole order. For example, if Germany has a €150 threshold:

  • Shipment A = €160 → duties applied

  • Shipment B = €90 → no duties

Commercial invoices: Generated separately for each shipment, with the correct origin, destination, and item details.

Shopify settings

No special action is required to enable split shipment processing in Swap — orders fulfilled from multiple warehouses are handled automatically.

⚠️ If multiple warehouses are not defined in Shopify, all orders will continue to be treated as if they ship from a single origin.

Shopify has an optional Split Shipping toggle that affects how shipping appears to customers at checkout:

  1. In Shopify Admin, go to SettingsShipping and delivery.

  2. Find the Split Shipping toggle under Shipping line settings:

    • Disabled — Customers see a single shipping line at checkout, even if products ship from multiple warehouses.

    • Enabled — Customers see separate shipping lines per fulfilment location, with a clearer cost breakdown.

  3. Make sure your warehouses and locations are correctly set up in Shopify. Products must be assigned to the right origin location for split shipments to work accurately.

Dashboard visibility

Split shipments are visible in the Swap dashboard. Each order displays all fulfilment legs separately, with duty and tax shown per shipment, and tracking linked to the correct origin.

ℹ️ Orders that are split are fully visible in Swap reports. A future update will include a dashboard toggle to choose whether to charge shipping per shipment or once per order.
