This article explains what the Harper integration is, how it works with Swap Returns, and how to set it up.

⚖️ This integration is for Returns V2 only.

What is Harper?

Harper is a "try before you buy" platform — customers aren't charged upfront, only for the items they decide to keep after a trial period. Because nothing is charged until the trial ends, this changes how returns need to be handled compared to a standard order.

How the integration works

Harper uses your Swap return flow to track which items a customer returns. Any items not returned are automatically billed by Harper — Swap's portal and RMA system track the return and provide status updates, but the actual charge to the customer happens on Harper's side, not in Swap.

💡 Because the customer was never charged upfront, this is a return workflow rather than a refund workflow — even though Harper ultimately charges the customer for anything they keep.

The amount shown on the RMA in Swap may not match what Harper actually charges the customer, since Harper also factors in handling and shipping fees when calculating the final amount.

Setting up the integration

1. Configure Advanced Rules

In Swap's Advanced Rules, apply the below configuration, which uses Shopify order tags to allow Refund only for Harper orders.

This removes the exchange and credit options for Harper returns, keeping the flow correctly scoped as a straight return, since the customer was never charged in the first place.

2. Configure webhook notifications

Harper needs to know as soon as an RMA is created, via a webhook.

  1. When you're onboarded with Harper, Harper will give you an endpoint to use.

  2. In your Swap dashboard, go to ReturnsIntegrations and create a new webhook using that endpoint, with the event set to Return created.

  3. Follow Swap Webhooks (Returns V2) for the full setup steps, including authentication and storing your secret key.

Things to know

  • Harper calculates the final charge for unreturned items, including handling and shipping fees, so the amount shown on the RMA in Swap is indicative, not final.

  • If you need help getting your endpoint or tags set up, reach out to your account manager.
