Charging Shipping Fees as a Separate Payment

By default, return shipping fees are deducted from the customer's refund, which reduces the amount they receive back. The Require Additional Payment for Shipping setting changes this: the customer receives their full refund and is charged the shipping fee as a separate additional payment.

Why use this setting?

  • Prevents Shopify from applying a "partial refund" tag to the order. When shipping fees are deducted from the refund, Shopify records the transaction as a partial refund because the full product price was not returned — this can affect reporting and downstream workflows.

  • Keeps refund and shipping fee transactions separate, simplifying accounting.

To enable the setting:

  1. Go to your Swap Dashboard.

  2. Open the Returns drop-down menu.

  3. Click Settings.

  4. Open the Returns tab.

  5. Find Shipping fees.

  6. Use the toggle to enable.

  7. Click Save.

The setting is disabled by default. Once enabled, it applies to all return shipping fees charged through the portal.

If a return results in both a refund and an exchange, the refund is processed first. The shipping fee is then charged as a separate additional payment.
