Portal Translations and Localisation

G
Written by Guido Kaspers

Swap supports translations and localisation in the returns portal, allowing your customers to use the portal in their preferred language.

This helps improve accessibility, customer experience, and international returns support.

What this means for your customers

When translations are enabled:

  • The portal can be displayed in supported languages.

  • Customers can switch between available languages using a language selector.

  • The selected language applies across the entire portal.

  • The language will remain active throughout the session.

  • Dates are displayed in the correct regional format.

  • Supported right-to-left languages display correctly.

By default, the portal detects the customer’s browser language and loads the appropriate version when available.

Language selection

Customers can manually select a language using the language dropdown in the portal.

Once selected, the chosen language will remain active for the duration of the session.

How translations are applied

Translations are generated when the first portal page is used in a selected language. On that initial visit, the page is translated in the background and stored. The translated version is displayed from the second visit to that page onwards.

This means that on a customer's first pass through the portal, pages can appear in the default language while translations are being generated. From the next visit onwards, all pages display in the customer's selected language.

When adding a language to the portal, it is recommended that you go through each step manually in the new language. This way, the new language will be displayed correctly for your customers.

How to enable translations

You can control translations directly in your Swap settings.

To enable or disable portal translations:

  1. Go to Returns in your Swap dashboard.

  2. Open Settings.

  3. Toggle Translations on or off.

When enabled, the portal will support language switching for your customers.

What is included in localisation

Localisation includes more than direct text translation. It also covers:

  • Regionally correct date formats

  • Proper layout support for right-to-left languages

  • Consistent display across all portal pages

All pages in the portal will display in the selected language when translations are enabled.
