Understanding Virtual Try-On

The two types of virtual try-on available on your storefront, where customers see them, and which product categories aren't supported.

Written by Jemma O'Leary

Your agentic storefront includes built-in virtual try-on (VTO), so customers can see how a product will actually look on them before they buy — with nothing extra required from you to make it work.

Two ways to try on

There are two types of virtual try-on available, and customers can move between them depending on what they're shopping for.

Avatar try-on

Customers build a simple avatar to see products on, by uploading a full-body photograph of themselves. Good lighting, a plain background and separates (ie. a top & trousers/skirt rather than a dress) help to improve the accuracy of their avatar.

An avatar can be saved to a customer's account, ready to use again on their next visit.

Live try-on

Customers can try products on in real time using their own camera, right from the product page — seeing themselves in the item as they move, rather than a static image. They can flip between products and capture a photo or short video to keep or share.

If live try-on isn't available for a particular product or device, it switches automatically to an avatar version using an uploaded or existing photo. Customers won't hit an error — just a smooth handover to the next best option.

Where customers see it

Try-on can be surfaced wherever it's useful: on the product page, alongside search and agent recommendations, in saved items, and at cart preview before checkout.

Product categories

Not every product category supports try-on, and the two types support slightly different ranges. If a product isn't eligible for either type, customers simply won't see a try-on option for it — no dead ends or errors, it just won't appear.

Not available for avatar try-on:

  • Underwear & lingerie

  • Bags & purses

  • Swimwear & beachwear

  • Hosiery & socks

  • Shoes & footwear

  • Jewellery & watches

  • Belts & gloves

  • Eyewear & tech accessories

  • Other / non-apparel items

Not available for live try-on:

  • Swimwear & beachwear

  • Underwear & lingerie

  • Sleepwear & loungewear

  • Hosiery & socks

  • Shoes & footwear

  • Belts & gloves

  • Other / non-apparel items

There's nothing you need to do to manage this — it's applied automatically based on product category, and no special photography or setup is required on your end for try-on to work.
