Understanding the original order tag on exchange and SGC orders in Shopify (Returns V2)

Swap tags exchange and gift card orders in Shopify with the original order number for reconciliation. This article explains the tag format and where it appears.

Written by Guido Kaspers

When Swap creates an exchange order or a Swap Gift Card (SGC) order in Shopify, we automatically add a tag to help you identify the original order that was returned.

This makes it easier to reconcile reports and understand the relationship between the original and the new order.

This tag only applies to merchants using Swap's legacy SGC order flow for gift cards. Merchants on Shopify's native Gift Card API don't get a separate SGC order, so this tag won't appear for their gift card returns.

Tag format

Exchange and SGC orders will include a Shopify order tag in the following format:

Swap_Original_Order:XXXX

Where:

  • XXXX is the original order number that was returned.

  • There are no spaces before or after the colon.

Example:

Swap_Original_Order:12345

Where this tag is applied

The Swap_Original_Order:XXXX tag is automatically added to:

  • Exchange orders created by Swap

  • SGC orders created by Swap

You can use this tag in Shopify to:

  • Filter and search for related orders

  • Build custom reports

  • Reconcile exchange activity against original sales

No configuration is required. The tag is added automatically when the new order is created.
